Open Flow

An evolving yoga and movement practice taught through an athletic and mindful lens.

Class Description

Students will learn to move better: to balance strength and flexibility with an emphasis on functional mechanics and form.

What to Expect

Expect a simple, grounding and focused flow with subtle invitations for more dynamic progressions (like a single leg squat, handstand or back roll). Every class opens with a theme, focused breathing, warm up, skill development/play, cool down/deeper stretching and mindfulness meditation. Experience is recommended but beginners are always welcome.

Philosophy

Using no style as style, students learn to develop a workability with their practice, employing what works and discarding what doesn’t. Find an interdisciplinary exploration of physical and mental skills with influences from Chan/Zen Buddhism, martial arts, psychology, calisthenics, Daoism, and more.

A Note on Live Recordings

Many of these classes are recorded in my house in what we like to call the "kids playroom/yoga room."

Half of the room is empty, simple, and spacious with nothing occupying the area except a yoga mat and some blocks. It has a lovely view of green foliage from our neighborhood tree.

The other half is usually a mess of kid books, toys, games, puzzles and all the stuff you don't see on the screen.

Practicing at home is not like going to the studio where we are removed from our own space. Teaching at home is the same. You might catch my kids barging into the room to grab a book, or simply to check on me and see what I'm doing.

I remember a time, at the beginning when this used to bother me, but now I understand it's all part of the training. When we can turn disturbances, interruptions, distractions, and clutter into challenges, or better yet, opportunities for training, we approach the most important skill of all: mastery.
